GILBERTO LAPARRA

Gilberto Laparra, founder of GoBeMax - a reputation marketing and online strategy company helps his clients to grow their business by building their reputations through growing their online business reviews. Gilberto is an accomplished speaker and presenter in both English and in Spanish and holds an advanced management degree from the Asociación de Gerentes de Guatemala (the Association of Managers of Guatemala).

In this episode, Gilberto shares his story of leaving his beloved Guatemala as well as his family run business in search of a more safe and secure future for his wife and children in the United States. Gilberto recounts coming to the U.S. with little to no English, an advanced management degree, a simple dream to achieve a better life and a small savings in Guatemalan Quetzals (GTQ), the currency of Guatemala. Learn as Gilberto navigated his way in the U.S. to become a successful entrepreneur as the sole income earner for his family.

Gilberto shares direct insights of not only thriving in the U.S. as a foreign resident by employing simple principles, building his own reputation. Gilberto also shares the hardest moment of his life in harrowing detail as he witnessed a horrific traffic accident unfold while walking through an intersection, that literally swept his wife out of his hand and trapped her under a car. For the next several months she fought for her life - and won! Learn how extreme adversity forever changed Gilberto, his family and an entire community for the better.

Below is an impromptu video of Gilberto serenading his wife and daughters while out on a family outing, just hours before the fateful accident occurred, on February 8th, 2014.  In this clip, Gilberto beautifully sings Mana´s "Un cachito de tú corazón" (translated as "A little piece of your heart"). INTERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR FAILURES?

I believe that its hard sometimes when you don't have the experience to accept that you've failed. That's why its so important to have a mentor that can guide you and tell you...learn from that. That's why its so important to read books and to know from other people that have more experience, more years in business to to better. Yes I've failed a lot of times and now I can say that every time that I fail, I just discover another way that I don't need to do that in my business...

WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU ARE GRATEFUL FOR?

I believe that I am so grateful for the knowledge that you can get. I believe that this is something that nobody can take from me. It doesn't matter If I've lost everything. If a Tsunami came and I lost my house, everything, external things... so for me knowledge is one of the most important things.
Of course family and the other one that I can say is relationship. I believe that leadership always builds relationships with anybody - with the humble guy that is working in a small office to the CEO for a huge company. You always need to be a gentlemen and always need to be nice with everybody because you never know who can help you in some moment. So  for me, life is to have an build relationships with your fellow man and serve them.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

Two things: my family and helping others. I believe that is so nice when somebody comes to me and says "thank you very much" because I changed something. I can feel better because I changed something and I believe, that for me, the most beautiful thing that can happen to anybody.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Good people around me that have good values and respect their fellow men inspire me. I believe that its a power they say, that for me is God, that can inspire you to try to be a [righteous] person and I believe that when you put the seed in good land, you're always going to get that fruit. That thing for me is a principle that helps me to be motivated every day and [work] hard to put that seed in the heart or in the minds of the people that I can and in my mind too, know that will taste that fruit . It doesn't matter if its for work, for church, every kind of place... I believe that that inspires me, knowing that, that power that I call God, I am going to receive that reward if I do that. I believe that sometimes they call it faith. I agree with that but, its something beautiful for me.

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME AND VISIT YOURSELF PRIOR TO BECOMING AN ENTREPRENEUR, WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE YOURSELF?

I will say the same thing I believe that I said to my daughter a couple days ago:  Future is bright. Just jump. Take the risk and you will get the fruits. I will say that. When I say that the future is bright, that doesn't mean that its not going to be hard or there won't be challenges, but it's bright because we learn from those kind of things. So jump, take the risk, its precious.
